43rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

This fest will run from July 4 to 12 in the Czech Republic and has many interesting films in several of the program sections. The official selection has a rule that really called my attention and reads as follows.

Only films made after January 1, 2007 which haven’t been previously shown in the competition of another international film festival may be included; films selected are generally world, international or European premieres.

So, most of the films screened in competition here are different to other festivals that by this time of the year most are showing the same movies. Anyway, here is the Official Selection.

Iza Stakla (Behind the Glass), Zrinko Ogresta, Croatia, 2008
Plennyj (Captive), Alexey Uchitel, Russia and Bulgaria, 2008
Les Tremblements Lointains (Distant Tremors), Manuel Poutte, Belgium and France, 2008
Dr. Alemán, Tom Schreiber, Germany, 2008 (seems interesting)
Il Mattino Ha l’Oro in Bocca (The Early Bird Catches the Worm), Francesco Patierno, Italy, 2008
The Guitar, Amy Redford, USA, 2007
A Nyomozó (The Investigator), Attila Gigor, Hungary, Sweden, Ireland, 2008
Karamazovi (The Karamazovs), Petr Zelenka, Czech Republic and Poland, 2008
Děti noci (Night Owls), Michaela Pavlátová, Czech Republic, 2008
The Photograph, Nan T. Achnas, Indonesia, France, Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweeden, 2007
Pretextos (Pretexts), Silvia Munt, Spain, 2007
Dixia de Tiankong (The Shaft), Zhang Chi, China, 2008
Frygtelig Lykkelig (Terribly Happy), Henrik Ruben Genz, Denmark, 2008
La Vérité ou Presque (True Enough), Sam Karmann, France, 2007

There are 15 films in competition in the East of the West section that you can check here. I suggest you browse the different sections to check all the films, docs and shorts that will be screened. Also, there are many tributes to filmmakers including one that honors Mexican Arturo Ripstein. To browse the site go here.
