31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards
Yesterday, January 8th, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced the nominations for the current edition of their annual awards that honor outstanding stunt, individual, cast and ensemble performances for the past year.
Voted on by SAG-AFTRA's membership of 122,000+ performers, the SAG Awards has the largest voting body on the awards circuit and a large number of them are also Academy voting members, therefore is a big crowd of Academy Awards voters that usually profile Oscar nominations and winner.
Wicked leads with 5 nominations followed by A Complete Unknown with 4 and Emilia Pérez and Anora with 3 nominations each.
Since 1995, when the ensemble cast category was introduced, only 4 films have won best picture at the Oscar without earning a SAG cast nomination. All five nominees are Oscar frontrunners but there is one frontrunner missing, The Brutalist; we assume will get an Oscar nomination -remember there could be up to 10 nominations in best picture category- but wonder if chances to get top award are diminished by the lack of support from this guild.
Angelina Jolie nor Nicole Kidman earned a nomination giving the spots to Pamela Anderson and Cynthia Erivo as Gascón, Madison and Moore were expected names. In the supporting role category the omissions call more the attention than those who are nominated as none other than Selena Gomez (also out of TV Comedy category but it's named in TV cast) is out while Zoe Saldaña is in suggesting her Oscar nomination may be reality for one and not for the other; still, the biggest surprise is Jamie Lee Curtis nomination and equally surprising is Margaret Quallye's snub.
Believe the male performance category is the most boring as all those nominated were expected to be nominated making possible that the two Oscar frontrunners still are Adrien Brody and Colman Domingo. Same happens with male supporting role as we all know Kieran Culkin has to and will win his first Oscar.
The awards show will stream live globally on Netflix Sunday, February 23 at 8:00 pm ET from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall.
