Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (The Princess and the Warrior)

The movie title literally means The Warrior and the Empress and this Tom Tykwer visually poetic and existentialist fairy tale film tells a about love, chance and destiny with an extremely well developed characters even when there is little shown or told about them.

Like in Run Lola, Run Tykwer continues to explore similar themes in this movie, but instead of the frenetic pace of Lola, this movie goes into a slow pace full of emotions, silences and actors expressions that tell all.

Franka Potente stars as Sissi the psychiatric ward nurse with a life of “no-life” that after Bodo (Benno Fürmann) robs a store and while escaping provokes a truck to hit Sissi and from that moment on the life of both Sissi and Bodo are changed forever and what follows is the most unusual story you can imagine. Both leads have extraordinary performances with some supporting roles –especially those psychiatric ward patients- quite good.

Great cinematography that creates a very stylish and visually striking romantic thriller with a very good music score in this basically very entertaining film that will surely please those that enjoyed more than normal the fabulous Run Lola, Run.

One of the things I liked most about this movie is the scene with two Bodo’s that I find was an amazing way to show what others may have done in a more symbolic and less realistic way.

The movie has multiple nominations and awards in fests and awards all over the world and I find it suited for adult audiences that like to have a romantic tale told like a thriller with many unexpected situations.

Enjoy!
