The Gymnast

Yes is a good movie with mesmerizing aerial performances and the most beautiful dancing performance by real life dancer Addie Yungmee. Tells the story of Jane that lives in an empty marriage, had a career as a gymnast and has a boring/empty life until she decides after many years to set foot in a gym and meets Nicole that gives her a new purpose in life and allows her to meet Serena.

Starring Dreya Weber as Jane (she also was in Everything is Relative) and beautiful Addie Yungmee as Serena, both perform acceptable, but both of them in the aerial scenes are visually stunning and they did all the scenes for real. These two women should do the show for real, as they look fantastic together. If you have ever seen live a Cirque du Soleil show, you will understand what I mean, as this could be a breathtaking performance for real.

This is also a story about coming out to your parents and individual rebirth; also interesting is that we could see two mature women on the screen, which we do not often have the chance to see. Have to say that I liked the movie, loved the aerials and my eyes were glued to screen when Addie Yungmee performed her dance routine.

But, I do not know if I’m the only one that feels that this story was NOT written for two women. Perhaps was written for a man and a woman or even two men. Let see if I can explain myself.

Some critics and viewers are commenting that this was better than Patrica Rozema’s When The Night is Falling. I do agree that for sure the circus related scenes are less spectacular in the later, but Rozema’s story is 100% written to be performed by two women and in that sense, I believe that Rozema’s movie is not only a lot better than this one, but also a lot more intense in the romance part of the story.

Perhaps is that the falling in love story here is weak, or they toned it down to go mainstream, or they gave more emphasis to the aerials or who knows what, but even if I know that is a falling in love story, I have a hard time enjoying this particular side of the movie. Much less totally believing that this movie is about a love story between two women.

Go figure, but I really hope I get some feedback, as I really want to know other viewers opinions. Maybe I’m the only one with this feeling.

Nevertheless is a visually stunning movie that is a must be seen movie to all that enjoy the genre or like to see in the screen outstandingly beautiful aerial performances. Me for one prefer the live aerial performances to the recorded ones, but here they are just beautiful.

  1. I looked at this movie a little differently than if I had seen this a few months ago..

I agree there is not enough romance, but one of my favorite "lesbian" movies has even less on screen romance than this. Fried Green Tomatoes is one of those movies that does not have to have the romance on the screen to be able to feel it..

This movie is not on the same level for me as Fried Green, but there were other things that I enjoyed seeing in this movie. Loved all the muscles!!! :) But it was the personal struggles that the 2 women were going thru that I could relate to.

as I said, if I saw this movie a few months ago, it would not have had the same impact on me.. Like last night, we watched To Each His Cinema. and last night I decided to quit smoking ( which did not have anything to do with the movie!! LOL!) but while watching the movie, I saw that everybody had a cigarette!!! When I watched some of it the other day, I didn't even notice the cigs.. Last night, it was like one long cigarette commercial!!!!

So I guess sometimes you have to be in the right mood to see some movies..

From a critical point of view, the acting was stiff, the dialogue was ok and the husband was the slimiest person they could have gotten for the role...

  2. Hi Kibbs!!!

Think I understand what you mean. Mood absolutely influences the way you see movies… but perhaps in my case, think that I have become more critical about the genre, I’m expecting more than what we get. See, lately I’ve been watching many gay movies and gee, they are so much better than lesbian movies!!! Without getting into the multiple reasons why, think that in the good gay movies, the basic one is that gays are portrayed more as human beings and the stories are about them in ordinary or extraordinary situations and not about or less focused in their sexual preference.

In that sense of course Fried Green Tomatoes is a great story, which in the book was totally lesbian but in the movie decided to skip that part, and btw I found more romance and chemistry in that movie than in the Gymnast.

I know there was a lot of muscles… sorry, but here I do not share your interest, had to happen! The struggle, yes I can relate to that, but if I get into this subject, then I feel that the characters are underdeveloped. Think that making their struggle the focal point of this movie would have made it a lot more interesting, even if the romance was presented as a secondary situation.

Gee, I didn’t even notice they were smoking in To Each His Cinema… lol! But congrats for stop smoking!!! I’m a heavy smoker, so I mean it for real! Have not find my motivation to quit, yet, and know that is hard to find.

I tend to believe that we have not to settle into seeing the kind of stuff we get in the genre, we as spectators should ask for MORE and perhaps could help to get more. Still, I’m realistic in the sense that it will take many years to get writers and storytellers to write extraordinary stories and then perhaps the movie machine will get oiled with nice budgets and then maybe the genre will be improved…

Thanks for your feedback I needed to hear from others, as this movie got so many great reviews, even from mainstream critics, that I was wondering what is that they are seeing that I can’t see.

Absolutely agree with the husband remark… bad casting, terrible actor and awful written character!

  3. Think I go it!!! Thanks to a comment from Rods, I think that the lack of credible emotions and feelings is what exactly makes me think that this story was written for a man/woman or man/man.

Know that many women do not express emotions/feelings, but most woman related movies in the genre or not, are all about expressing emotions/feelings, this one had very little of those.

    Now I'm at ease!!!
