This new Harry Potter is darker and according to me, deals with grownup situations that are presented as metaphors in a children story. Dialogue is more interesting, well the truth is that there is more dialogue than before and that it should have made it more appealing to me; but it was a sleeper.
For an hour or so the movie tells stories that are less interesting or maybe is that I missed all the action that previous installment had sprinkled through the movie making them easier to watch as entertainment. Yes, the rhythm in previous installments between action and story telling was better than in this one.
Here the action is left to the end and is grandiose, special effects are outstanding and the climax is very intense and have to admit that I woke up and felt all the excitement of Harry, all the gang, the villains and Dumbledore doing their thing.
Then being more a Star Wars generation, I have to say the climax had too many similarities to Star Wars than I think it should have, as the battle between Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort it was almost the same as the one between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obviously with all the new technology this one looked more spectacular, but even the color code was the same with evil in red and good in blue. For a moment I thought I was the only one thinking about this relationship but reading reviews found that others established it too.
On the good side I just loved all the British actors appearing one after the other with small but good roles. Liked the evil Helena Bonham-Carter and just loved Imelda Stauton, she is such a good actress. It made me think about all the good British actors in recurring roles and the ones that have been in previous installments and even made me think that in the next movie they should have Anthony Hopkins!!! As the story gets darker and darker, there has to be a character for the incredible Mr. Hopkins.
Well, if you fall asleep or not, this Harry Potter will totally awake you when it reaches the climax and only because the end of the movie, I say that is worth to watch it. So if you read the book you can consider just seeing the end, you’ll not miss much and you’ll not get upset like so many other book readers that are complaining about the many things the director and script writer decided to leave out in the screen.
i cant believe u fell asleep!!!!!
ReplyDeletei totally loved this one!!!!!
personally, the one i have liked the least, was the previous one :(
i thought it was too rush, they left out very important parts and dunno; and comparing the previous to this one, i totally loved this one;
the only part that imo fell short was the end! although it was very good (u know all the action and all) i expected/wanted more; in the book (yes, sadly enough, i've read them all) the fight (death eaters vs order of phoenix; and voldemort vs dumbledore) it was so much better
but well, cant have it all, and i understand it's very hard getting a whole book into a 2 hr movie;
so long story short: I LOVED IT :D
too bad u fell asleep :( maybe next one ;)
Hi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteSeems that we are the opposite with Harry... but its normal, as you have read the books and I haven't... So I can only see the story in the movie and don't know anything else.
Besides this book was 857 pages!!! and is the longest she wrote, while the movie is the shortest of all!! So there has to be important things not included here...
Still, I own all the previous dvd's and probably will buy this one too for my collection... so, I'll see it again and maybe I wont fall asleep as I did in the cinema!!! lol!!
You should totally read the books!!!!!
ReplyDeletethey are way better than the movies
they leave out too much in the movies
example: do you know who peeves and winky are???
did you know that ron mad the quiddich team???
did you know that dobby found the room of requirment??
did you know that ron and hermoine are prefects????
just give thebooks a go
I've never read a Harry Potter book and I don't really feel bad about it.
ReplyDeleteThe movies, I fell asleep at the first one and that was it for me.
Now, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings...that's quality stuff!!!
Being an avid book reader and I devour books as much I as I devour movies, the Harry Potter books are not appealing to me and as Rods, I am not apologetic about it. The movies are okay as entertainment and as you may notice I watch almost every genre and movies from all countries around the world, so I wont skip the Potter movies.
ReplyDeleteStill, I do recognize that these books have motivated children allover the world to start reading and/or to like reading which is great, as reading develops imagination when movies or visual images not necessarily do.
Usually books that I read do not become movies… and if they do, I prefer to skip the movie unless there is an outstanding performance, director or anything related to the artistic or technical aspects of the movie. The opposite works too, if a movie based on a book I haven’t read, stimulates my curiosity to learn more about the story or the characters, then I will read the book.
Then last statement it did not happened with Harry Potter, so I skipped and will skip the books.
So splendiferous, if you enjoy reading I can recommend some easy to read American books by authors like Dean Koontz, John Grisham and many others; and if you are into not only reading entertainment, then you have a wide variety of authors from allover the world that will greatly stimulate your imagination and give you motives to think beyond the linear plot in a story. Try reading Kafka’s The Metamorphosis or Herman Hesse Steppenwolf and if you enjoy them go on to Camus, James Joyce or even Sartre, Kierkegaard and de Beauvoir…and then the world of authors may be open to go further exploring.
Still, I am glad you read and are so passionate about the books you read.
i do agree with you that you could hardly consider the harry potter books a masterpiece; and i confess, i read them, 'cause i was forced too; but still come on, if u have nothing better to do, it doesnt hurt!
ReplyDeleteand yeah rods, u could hardly put this in the same level as lotr, or even star wars; but then u look at what they tried to do with narnia, and u start appreciating this movies and the books their based on a bit more!
storyteller, i had no clue that this was the longest book! imo the last 3 were a drag; they had way too much info/detail 'bout useless stuff; nice book recommendations, i remember reading Herman Hesse awhile ago, loved it! i might give it another go!
@anonymous: good point about narnia...LOL!!!
ReplyDelete@storyteller: maybe you should consider another blog...about books. We could start a "book-of-the-month" blog!
I remember reading a few years ago that Harry Potter´s creator was an unemployed woman, with a child, out in the cold and hungry. In cheap cafes and public places she used to write. She wrote what was in her mind, the story of a little boy with no parents, and magic all around... A GOLD MINE !! Nowadays the woman is very rich and very famous, and the only writer that invents words and meanings for them, she innovates, she provokes, and she motivates people (young and old) to read to become addict to her books, something than has not happened in the history of humanity as far as I remember...
ReplyDeleteSo there are still a few more book adaptations, movies to be directed by the best directors possible, maaaaagic, amazing repertoire of english actors and actresses (the Redgraves, Peter O´toole, Kelly Macdonald, Helen MIrren, Clive Owen ?), spectacular effects, absolute creative adaptation of the characters, situations and locations, and good and evil for us to enjoy.
I think Happy Potter has it all, fantasy, drama, family, life, death, HP is a fenomenom of our times, a real blessing for all the people in relation with him (books, movies,pharaphernalia, etc). Little Harry & Co. are growing up, in front of our eyes, ... and I am delighted !
Thanks Mrs. JK Rowling !!
Have listened to all the audio books, read by Jim Dale, and thought they were fantastic.. The movies were ok....
